Fort Worth Gypsies- The Details...

Bridesmaids from a wedding featured on TLC's "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding".
Alright, so for those of you who watched "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" last night...how amazing was that?!?  Now do you understand my fascination with these people?  I was very pleased to discover that the show featured actual Travelers and that they seemed to have quite a few things in common with the gypsies here that I am somewhat familiar with.  What I find perhaps most interesting is the lack of information available about Travelers and the lack of people living here that are totally unaware of their existence!  They have managed to fly under the radar here in Ft. Worth very well, so it should be very interesting to see if any local gypsies reply to the casting call that TLC is currently having for a show called "Gypsyville".  We shall see... but, in the mean time, as I promised yesterday...some gypsy spotting tips!  I will first tell you a little about my Traveler spotting experiences and how I even knew about them in the first place.  I vaguely remember seeing a "20/20" or "Dateline" a LONG time ago, (I may have been seven years old...) and they had an undercover journalist document their time within a Traveler community.  I remember being very interested in the little girls that were dressed up with tons of makeup and big ol' hair (big ol' is an actual adjective here in Texas) in sequined dresses trying impress the families of young boys so their marriages could be arranged.  Looking back, I wish I had been older and really able to recall all I that was featured that night!  I did not hear about the gypsies again until a high school sociology class.  I had a professor (whom I'm assuming strayed from the lesson plans thank goodness) to spend a day or two of class telling us everything she knew of the local Travelers.  If I remember correctly, her neighborhood had been one in which the Travelers had targeted for a roofing scam and she had a bit of a vendetta with them.  Shortly after this of the record class lesson, I had my first gypsy encounter while hosting at a local restaurant.  I remember seeing a group of women pour out of a very nice, extended cab, truck and walk through the doors.  They were hard to miss...6-8 women, all attractive, all dressed in flagrant designer duds, even the younger ones who couldn't have been more than 12 years old.  Now, when I say flagrant, I mean like Gucci boots in the double "G" print up to their knees and "LV's" covered just about everything else!  (That is a little dramatic, but I am trying to paint the picture for you!)  Anyways, after they finished eating, one of the younger ladies in the group walked up to the bartender for change and out of her LV purse, came and LV wallet, and I watched her shuffle through several $100 bills before pulling one out for change.  I guess the bartender saw the surprise and curiosity on my face because he gave me a "wait a second and I'll explain" wink.  Once the girl had gone back to her table, I raced to discuss the young girl with the pretty bag and the big bills!  "Gypsies,"  the bartender calmly stated.  This particular bartender had worked at this restaurant for at least 15 years and was happy to share his gypsy experiences with me!  Here is what I was told to look for...

*Since they have strict beliefs that the men should work and the women should keep house, it is most common to see a group of the women out together.
*They will most likely all have a similar look.  This "look" is hard for me to put into words, but kinda pretty, elfish I guess is how I would describe them.  Brownish, reddish hair, somewhat fair skinned (but maybe with a tan) attractive, and they very obviously take great pride in their appearance.  I have never seen a sloppy gypsy!
*They dress to the nines.  I don't always have their same taste, but I am able to recognize that they put thought and effort into their outfits and outward appearances.  The younger girls tend to dress more maturely and wear more makeup than is typically accepted by "outsiders".  A friend of mine once commented that the young girls looked like the girls on "Toddlers and Tiaras" or one of the other kiddie pageant shows.
*They speak with an interesting accent that sounds to me like some sort of Cajun meets Southern mix.

These are kinda the basics of spotting Travelers here in Ft. Worth, but to really train your eye, I will probably be most effective telling a few more of my run-ins with the local Travelers.  (I may have to spread them out because this could take me a little while.)  I'll leave you with one to end the night...So, my sister had taken a job working at a Dillard's here in town and had told me the gypsies had been up there a few times, so naturally I had her document every sighting and went to visit her at work more often than I probably would under different circumstances.  On one such visit, I was luck to have a GREAT spotting!  As I was looking over the new arrivals, my friend and I heard a very large herd of hollering children heading our direction.  As they neared, I glanced over to see a group of at least 20 children all running around like little hoodlums and knew at once what I was witnessing.  "Gypies,"  I told my friend as I grabbed her and tagged along discreetly behind them.  (It has been speculated that this is a tactic used by the Travelers to steal from stores at times.  Basicallly while everyone is so caught up in watching this large group of loud children, a select 2-3 may break off and use the others as distraction.  I am not stating this as fact, as a theory I have heard from others more than once, explaining this behavior.)  My friend accompanied me as we followed along for a few minutes but was confused as she had never heard of the gypsies!  I asked her the last time she had seen a group of children that all looked like they could be siblings, that all had adorable outfits on, and that all had designer bags.  After she took note of those visuals, I told her to listen to their accents...she hadn't heard a similar one before.  The group soon departed the mall, but myself and a few others standing around had no doubt that we had just had a pretty darn good gypsy spotting.  I don't interfere, I just observe as I don't think they would respond very well to being integrigated.  I do wish there was more information available on the Travelers, but I suppose they may not seem quite as interesting if that was the case.  So did you watch the show last night?  What were your thoughts?  Were you previously aware of Travelers/gypsies and if so, have you had any experiences with them?  I would love to hear all about it if so!  I have a few other experiences I will share this week, so until then, check out two of the few articles I have been able to find on the local Travelers and have a great night!

  3. I recently visited a movie theater one night in SW fort worth. After seeing the loud group of 15+ kids I asked the girl working the front if it was high school night. She replied quietly, "gypsies." the front of the theater was trashed and I told my girlfriend from china that I hope they weren't seeing the sale movie that we were. Of course they were. After getting our popcorn we went into the theater and sat down on a wet seat. The 15+ kids had thrown a drink and ice on a kid that was sitting below and had made that kid defensive and in need to protect himself. Before he could leave the theater to complain the gypsies pushed him to the point of jumping the seats and physically attacking them. The girls in the group, all with big fancy hair and half length shirts ran out of the theater first while the guys stayed to fight. Being disgusted and missing out on the movie I left to go get my money back and report the situation. As I was doing so, the rest of the gypsy guys left running out of the theater. Other than that experience, while working at Starbucks we has a gypsy sit on and break the sink and threaten to sue. At least they keep things interesting. ~

One time we had a situition where a group of them got mad at us because we asked them to stop cussing so loud and they ended up going upstairs to a little store connected to the restaurant and broke a lot of there merchandise

I was in a hair salon about a week and a half ago. The salon was off of camp bowie. There were women and children everywhere. Most of them had louis vuitton handbags. All were dressed very nice. Twin girls about 5 or 6 ears old had hollister stuff on. I can't remember how conversation got started with an employee but it souded like they all were having hair done because there was supposed to be a wedding take place on a Wednesday or Thursday night. All ages were either having their put up or extensions done. The children had long hair as well and they were having updo's. There was so much going on, I don't know how the employees kept track of who had paid and who hadn't! One little girl was sittig at the chair next to me having her long hair put up. I remarked how pretty her hair was and she was really rude. I later asked my stylist how come everyone of them seemed so rude. I thought he was kidding when he said they were gypsies. I thought he was kidding. He went on to say they were in quite often. He said they always pay in cash, drive the best vehicles and wear the finest clothes but they live in mobile homes some where in white settlement in ft.worth. He said the girls only go to school for some years and then they are taken out of school before they finish high school. There were no little boys with any of them. I said I thought gypsy peole moved a lot. He said they are gone for periods of time but alwas come back. They all looked like they could have ben relatives. All the above may not be spelled right but the above statements are my first experiencebwith gypsies around ft. Worth. I have lived around ft. worth for a long time and never knew there any gypsies!

  8. the Irish travelers of the terrible county of white settlement need to be demolished one by one .... I AM WHITE SETTLEMENTS RECKONING I have Watched since a child my family's ownings Be ruined by these dreadful children causing hazard in our peaceful Sunday mass ... Eventually running my once peaceful family into divorce ... My dear mother took off never seen her again heard rumors of her dying in a fatal vehicle accident... A few years after the divorce my father was gunned down by a few of white settlements finest after a bad drug trade with a few tinkers gone wrong ... I watched as they went after my father on foot and let the tinkers get away at that moment of watching them passing me with grins from ear to ear then suddenly I heard gun shots horrified I ran to the noise of the shots and sadly I ran into my fathers unconsious life less body while an officer was trying to revive him then i blacked out ... Few months a trial begun to put away the tinkers that was involved ... From what everyone was saying it was a won case sealed deal !!! After months and months of sadness I might have one shot of happiness we walked into the court house the judge said loudly will the defendants please rise ... The gypsie men rised up all dressed to the finest in versachi and Gucci clothing smiling with such evil yet terrifying ways of them .... The judge says the defendants are convicted a silence went though the room for a short time then a loud voice came and the judge said NOT GUILTY cheers spreaded the room as me just a Boy stood in irony once a smiling child happy once again on the right track struck down once more by his own kind for these devilish ppl as they was walking out they passed me smiling and one small very muscular man whisperd into my ear game over reff ... Then taped me on the head and walked away hugging his family members with his delighted children hugging there precious daddy so happy ... Then I realized I was once that boy but these devilish ppl took it away from me ... That very moment I paused in tears felling pity for myself then something snapped inside of me ... Anger came over me anger I had never felt before ... Such anger that possed me into doing evil yet passionate deeds I turned into a criminal overnight hurting innocent ppl stealing just to get by and fighting in street fights just to get by being a punching bag for professional boxers for low prices ...I was giving respect not to much crap but no one took me seriously ... Until the next year I started doing school training studying in law quickly got a degree in law with a private Japanese business school in Japan moved there for seven years and trained in many fighting styles with my once master Kazushi sakuraba former mma great he taught me meaning things one of those many things was showing me my own strengh in years of being a punching dummy boxing partner for fighters like Bernard hopkins and James toney ... No one could knock me down or really even hurt me I just kept coming forward ... I didn't realize my actual abilities I grew stronger and faster and quicker brain wise and ability wise athleticism also was tremendous ... I hit an enourmous grow sprout once being 6,4 I grew to 7 ,2 although At that time only 19 almost 20 Years old ... I felt powerful and indestructible ... I began having amateur under ground street fight bouts in Tokyo I went undefeated having a record of 57 wins and no losses all first 20 mins and all by KO ... Most of my challengers were brought to Er afterwards nearly dead after that no one would fight they all complained of me being to passionate and I took it to serious i was very angerd of this and left Japan for good moving back to texas just last weekend ... I feel I'm ready now to get revenge on those children and those parents for what they did to me this fall around Halloween once again i am the tinkers reckoning and they will fell my pain and suffering this fell believe me ty for your time god bless

  11. Please do not equate travellers with gypsies. They aren't Romany gypsies and Romany do not dress like that. Please educate yourselves on Romany gypsies. Irish travellers are not the same.

They don't dress in short skirts. Wear long skirts and have several traditional dances inspired by travelling and inspired other cultures yet they don't get that credit instead it's passed off as for example "Traditional Russian dance".

    Romany gypsy dances...

Very old school. The gypsies travellers cannot emulate ancestry comes from India. One thing remains the same. Very long skirt.
